The Brave Hunter’s Discoveries In Amos Tutuola’s Novel: The Witch-Herbalist of the Remote Town

This Article studies the Brave Hunter’s discoveries during his two journeys in Amos Tutuola’s novel, “The Witch-Herbalist of The Remote Town.” The aim is to show some aspects of Nigerian civilization, especially the Yuruban civilization in terms of beliefs, culture, and tradition that the Brave Hunter discovers during his two journeys in the novel. Using the socio-psychological approach, the study findings reveal that Tutuola, in writing the two journeys of the Hunter in his novel, uses a symbolic representation of things to depict how the Europeans were coming to Africa, especially in Nigeria during the civilizing missions. This resulted to the conclusion that the colonizers discovered many things in Nigeria during their journeys. So, they discovered the culture, tradition and the civilization of the jungle people and they did not think of going back home because of the wealth they discovered there.
